What is the SCHD ex-dividend date and why does it matter?
The ex-dividend date is the single most critical date for any dividend investor planning a purchase. It is the cutoff day on which SCHD shares begin trading without the right to receive the upcoming dividend distribution.
- If you buy before the ex-dividend date: You own the shares in time for the record date and are legally entitled to receive the upcoming quarterly dividend payment on the payable date.
- If you buy on or after the ex-dividend date: The seller (previous owner) receives the upcoming dividend distribution, and you will not receive a payout until the following quarter.
- If you sell on or after the ex-dividend date: You still receive the dividend distribution even though you no longer own the shares on the payable date.
For ordinary cash dividends under the current US settlement rules, Investor.gov explains that the ex-dividend date is generally the record date when it is a business day. A purchase on or after the ex-date does not receive that distribution. Special large and stock distributions have different rules; use the issuer's named dates rather than deriving a cutoff from a generic rule. SEC investor guidance.

Dates: Schwab's official 2026 schedule, page 1, in the quarterly group that explicitly includes SCHD. Completed March, June and September amounts: issuer distribution rows, checked October 4, 2026. The December 9 amount is not yet listed. The starred December 30 event is an additional distribution only if necessary, not a promised extra payment. Dates remain subject to change.
The usual months do not replace the payable-date column. In this 41-payment file, the June 26, 2024 ex-dividend row belongs to a July 1, 2024 cash receipt, so an ex-date month is not always the payment month. Official historical records
How to use the schedule before buying
- Read the exact scheduled ex-date: December 9, 2026. Schwab schedule.
- For an ordinary cash distribution, purchase before the ex-date to be eligible. Buying on December 9 is too late for that payment. SEC guidance.
- Keep the scheduled December 14 payable date separate from eligibility. Your broker's account posting time is not supplied by the issuer schedule.
- Leave the next dollar amount blank until the issuer lists it. September's $0.2665 is a completed historical distribution, not a December estimate.
For a completed example, the June 2026 distribution had an ex-date of June 24 and a payable date of June 29. The purchase needed to precede June 24 to qualify under Schwab's rule. Waiting until June 29 did not qualify a new purchase for that payment. Payment record · Eligibility rule
Convert eligible shares into a payment amount
The example holding of 100 shares is an illustration, not an official fund statistic. All amounts below are our arithmetic using the retained official per-share amounts. Assume 100 eligible shares at every relevant payment, no reinvestment, and gross cash before personal taxes or costs.
Gross payment = eligible shares × distribution per share
Shares corresponding to a gross payment = gross payment ÷ distribution per share
| Example | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| March 2026 payment on 100 eligible shares | 100 × $0.2569 | $25.69, payable 2026-03-30 |
| June 2026 payment on 100 eligible shares | 100 × $0.2525 | $25.25, payable 2026-06-29 |
| Reverse the June example | $25.25 ÷ $0.2525 | 100 eligible shares |
| Combined March and June payments | 100 × ($0.2569 + $0.2525) | $50.94; two payments, not a full year |
| September 2026 payment on 100 eligible shares | 100 × $0.2665 | $26.65, payable 2026-09-28 |
| Three paid 2026 distributions on 100 eligible shares | 100 × ($0.2569 + $0.2525 + $0.2665) | $77.59; three payments, not a full year |
For 100 eligible SCHD shares, the June 24, 2026 ex-dividend event corresponds to $25.25 payable on June 29, 2026. Underlying official record
What did a full year pay?
Use the completed 2025 calendar year, rather than multiplying the most recent quarter by four:
| 2025 payable date | Official amount per share | Calculated cash for 100 eligible shares |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-03-31 | $0.2488 | $24.88 |
| 2025-06-30 | $0.2602 | $26.02 |
| 2025-09-29 | $0.2604 | $26.04 |
| 2025-12-15 | $0.2782 | $27.82 |
Annual cash = 100 × ($0.2488 + $0.2602 + $0.2604 + $0.2782) = $104.76. Dates and per-share inputs: official distribution records.
Using the four 2025 payment rows, 100 eligible SCHD shares correspond to $104.76 of annual cash, not four copies of the December payment. This is a historical calculation, not a forecast for 2026. A monthly budgeting average would be $104.76 ÷ 12 = $8.73; that does not change the quarterly payment schedule.
Download and use the payment table
Download the 41-payment CSV from DividendSteps. The file includes the quarter, ex-dividend date, payable date, USD distribution per share, per-payment yield status, official source URL and source-check date. Its public download was checked on September 9, 2026.
Open it in your spreadsheet app. Filter the payable_date column to the cash-receipt year you want to review. Add your own eligible-share count beside each row and multiply it by distribution_per_share_usd. Sum the resulting payment amounts. If your holdings changed, use each payment's eligible shares rather than multiplying the whole history by today's position.
The table preserves the official amounts exactly as recorded. SCHD underwent a 3-for-1 split in October 2024; the retained pre-split amounts have not been divided by three here. Use the share count applicable to each historical payment. Do not compare an unadjusted pre-split amount with a post-split amount as though they used the same share basis. Schwab split notice

Questions about eligibility and cash receipts
Is the ex-dividend date the day I get paid?
No. SCHD's September 2026 ex-date was September 23 and its payable date was September 28. Eligibility and payment are separate columns in the issuer record.
Can I buy on the ex-date and receive that payment?
For an ordinary cash dividend, a purchase on or after the ex-date does not receive the upcoming distribution. Purchase before the ex-date to qualify, subject to the applicable transaction rules. SEC investor guidance.
Does the schedule tell me when my broker credits cash?
The calendar supplies an issuer payable date. It does not supply an account-specific posting time, DRIP execution price, fee or tax withholding. Check your actual broker transaction ledger for those fields.
What will the next December payment be?
The amount is not listed in the official distribution rows checked October 4, 2026. The date schedule does not supply a dollar estimate. We leave it unknown rather than repeating September's amount.
Reader motivation: a public discussion about confusing an ex-date with a pay date. Answers above use issuer and SEC records, not forum amounts.
